In our competition proposal, we developed a well-founded, inspiring and forward-looking vision for the redevelopment of De Plein primary school in Holsbeek. Our approach goes beyond the traditional school concept with sports facilities: through its deep integration with local community life, this creates a unique opportunity to create a new, beating heart for rural Holsbeek. ‘De Plein’ is more than just a school name. In this vision, we turn that name into a promise: a village square that will become the beating heart of Holsbeek, the centre of village life and social interaction. A place where learning and living, school and community merge. The site is situated in a strategic location, nestled amongst various community facilities. It already serves as a hub within the social fabric: a space where education, youth work and community life come together. That is precisely why we have opted for an approach that focuses on social interaction, multifunctionality, shared use and village revitalisation. We are not designing a school with a playground, but a school inside a playground – a public space supported by and for the community. A place that is playful, peaceful and safe for children.
